Mother’s Day honors “the best mother who ever lived your mother,” according to Anna Jarvis. Happy Mother’s Day to one and all.
Today is Mother’s Day, a celebration that dates back to 1905, when a woman named Anna Jarvis started a campaign for a national holiday to recognize “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.” The founder of Mother’s Day was not a mother herself. Anna Jarvis created the holiday to honor her late mother, Ann.
Mothers day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May and it is a day that honours all the mothers in the world. Mother’s Day 2018 will be celebrated across the world on May 13.

Ann Reeves Jarvis, a West Virginia native with 11 children, is credited with starting Mothers Day Work Groups in the 1850s. The group’s goal was to help sick mothers and their children. During and after the Civil War, the groups provided medical care to wounded soldiers.
Once the war was over, Jarvis organized Mother’s Friendship Day picnics.Jarvis fought for full credit for founding Mother’s Day, a battle that consumed much of her time and money and eventually left her poor, blind, and living in a sanitarium at the end of her life. She died in 1948 at 84 years old.
Jarvis died in 1905, but her daughter Anna Marie took the baton and organized events honoring mothers. Former US President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day a national holiday in 1914.
For more than 100 years, we have set aside this one day to honor all mothers. Many will start off with a church service indeed, it has become the custom at many churches to have a special service honoring mothers.
