Prof. Jaswant Singh: His New Scientific Expedition to Arctic

NEW DELHI: It is a matter of pleasure for the Indian scientists that it’s one of the members, Prof. Jaswant Singh has been chosen as a distinguished member of the Expedition of Arctic. There are eighth members in this team and it will complete its work in 38 days. They will take up multiple research there, mainly, they will try to know the effects of ultraviolet rays on plants.

Prof. Jaswant Singh is one of the foremost scientists of India, who has the honor of Participating in the 22nd and 24th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. He was also a Member- Task Force for the “Third Indian Station at Antarctica”, at Larsemann Hills, Antarctica. He has also contributed immensely and worthwhile as an Expert Member-District level Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (DEIAA).

He has been serving as the Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr. R. M. L. Avadh University, Fizabad-224001, U.P. India for the last many years.

He passed M.Sc. in the subject of Botany (1983) with first division from Lucknow University, Lucknow, and for the doctoral studies, joined at the National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, and undertaken detailed aerobiological surveys in a few places in India and the spores of the different ferns were tested for allergicallergenic reactions at the allergy clinic of King George’s Medical College, Lucknow.

On the basis of his vast research experience and paper published in the reputed national and international Journals, he was selected as a Research Associate at the Ecotoxicology Division of Industrial Toxicology Research Center (IITR), Lucknow, and later on, he was awarded CSIR, Scientist Fellowship by Government of India.

Besides above activities, he also conducted laboratory studies involved in the several society oriented sponsored projects.

He was invited as a faculty assistant in the three week Indo Dutch Training program conducted at ITRC, wherein, about 50 participants were given theoretical and practical demonstration on various aspects of water pollution.

Based on his expertise, he was selected as a participant to attend the Risk Assessment Summer School (RASS V), Aug. 27 to Sept. 4, 1994 in the United Kingdom by the International Union of Toxicology. International exposure and interaction with toxicologist had helped him in his selection as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences of Dr. RML Avadh University, Faizabad.

He has edited many books. Some of them are:

He has also given his valuable services as an editor and chief editor in many Journals of international repute. Some are like this: International Journal of Applied Environmental Science and Technology, Member-Editorial BoardJournal of Applied and Natural Science, Member-Editorial BoardJournal of Sustainable Environmental Research, Member-Advisory-Board People and Planet, Assistant Editor- Environment Conservation Journal.

He visited many countries in his long span of career as a scientist like Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, United Kingdom and Dubai.

For his best contribution in the field of science, he was awarded Acharya Narendra Dev award for significant contribution in Science (2003), ASEA Toxicology Award (2007) and Fellow of the Academy Environmental Biology, (2007).

He has still the same stamina and spirit to serve the field of science, so his beloved country could also progress in this vast field immensely and bring a good luck, fortune and a good name to the country.
