Siang river, which originates in Tibet, is known as Tsangpo in China. It joins Lohit and Dibang rivers downstream to form the Brahmaputra in Assam.Tsangpo, which enters India through Arunachal Pradesh is known as the Siang river in the state.
A flood alert has been issued in low-lying areas bordering the Siang (Brahmaputra) river in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam following China cautioned India about the rising water level in the river which is called Tsangpo across the border.
China had earlier sent an alert to India of heavy rainfall in the region as it would soon release water into the Tsangpo River.
China released water into Siang, the Indian portion of the Brahmaputra and the water level has been swelling ever since.
The Chinese report states that the heavy rains in the river basin are likely to cause massive flooding in the states. Meanwhile, a flood alert has also been sounded in Nagaland and three districts in Meghalaya.
According to National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the water level of the Siang river at Tuting recorded in the morning was 415.17 meter and that in Pasighat was 153.30 meter.
19 persons were rescued by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Friday who were stranded in an island at Siang river in East Siang district.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi while speaking to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday assured all possible support to the flood-affected state involving the rescue and relief operations.
