The world experienced its hottest June on record last month, with an average temperature worldwide of 61.6F (16.4C), according to new data.France crossed the 45C mark for the first time. Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Turkey also recorded their highest ever temperatures for June.Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as the Hawaii and US Gulf of Mexico regions, experienced their hottest Junes on record.Average temperatures in France, Germany and northern Spain, which have experienced a heat wave, hit as high as 18 degrees F above the normal range, with temperatures in France hitting as high as 114 F (46 C).As extreme heat waves happen more often across the globe, and Earth’s temperature continues to rise, it’s getting harder to ignore the unpleasant effects of climate change.NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) gathers these numbers through a database of actual surface weather stations around the world, including about 1,200 land stations. The heatwave experienced in Germany at the end of the month was also felt in countries across Europe – including France, northern Spain, northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Republic. The Red Cross says heatwaves are the deadliest natural hazard facing humanity, releasing new guidelines for cities to reduce the dangers of heatwaves.The average temperature in Europe in June 2019 was around two degrees above what is considered the “normal” range, a reference period based on average temperatures between 1981 and 2010. Last month a severe heatwave smashed records across western Europe, with temperatures reaching 46C in one region.Some gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, producing a “greenhouse effect” which makes the planet warmer. The global temperature was about 0.1 degree Celsius higher than the previous warmest June, which was recorded in 2016.France is the only country to have officially announced the upcoming balmy weather conditions, projections by experts and other weather agencies show that Germany, Austria, the UK, Norway, the Netherlands Spain, Portugal, will also witness extremely high temperatures.
