Himachal Heading For A Record Turnout In The Assembly Elections

The highest voter turnout was recorded in Sirmour district with 82 percent polling.

SHIMLA: With over 74.4% turnout in the assembly elections  Himachal Pradesh is heading for a record voting. Polling for the 68 assembly constituencies ended peacefully today without any untoward incident. The highest voter turnout was recorded in Sirmour district with 82 percent polling while the least percentage of 69.5 was recorded in Hamirpur district.

Shimla district recorded 72.5 % polling with Virbhadra Singh’s home tehsil Rampur recorded 74% voting. District Solan had a turnout of 77.4 %.

According to the data shared by Chief Election Officer Pushpender Rajput,  Mandi district had a turnout of 72 percent while neighbouring Kullu had 77.9%. Bilaspur and Kinnaur districts had 75 percent polling while Kangra had 72 percent.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is contesting from Arki in District Solan while his son Vikramaditya Singh is contesting from Shimla Rural constituency. Former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal is contesting from Sujanpur in Hamirpur district.

Fate of 337 candidates have been locked in the EVMs.  Voting started at 8 am today with small number of voters reaching the booths but as the day began polling too picked up. Till 4 pm 64% polling had taken place while it continued beyond 7 pm in certain booths.

Among the senior voters were a 108 years old Sita Devi from Palampur district  and another 101 year old Pashmu Devi from Chamba district.

While the election commission claimed exepmplary arrangements made for the high turn out  the BJP claimed an anti incumbancy wave for the overwhelming for the same.  Results of the elections will be declared on 18th December.
