NEW DELHI: India and Afghanistan have jointly flagged off the first consignment of wheat from India to Afghanistan. The consignment is being shipped from Kandla to Chabahar in Iran.Swaraj also thanked the Iranian Government for providing assistance in facilitating the movement of this gift through Chabahar Port.
Chabahar port, located in the Sistan-Balochistan province on the energy-rich Persian Gulf nation’s southern coast, lies outside the Persian Gulf and can be easily accessed from India’s western coast, bypassing Pakistan.External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and her Afghan counterpart Salahuddin Rabbani flagged off the shipment of wheat from India to Afghanistan via video conferencing, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) said.
Swaraj reiterated that India remains committed to work closely with its regional and international partners to bring peace, security, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan.The Indian government has promised a supply 1.1 million tonnes of wheat for the people of Afghanistan on a grant basis, according to the Asian News International (ANI).
India would continue supporting Afghanistan’s reconstruction, capacity-building and socio-economic development, including under the framework of the New Development Partnership, Swaraj said.During the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Iran in May 2016, a three-way deal on establishing the International Transport and Transit Corridor was inked.
