Excellence with G.O.P.T.A.© Series: Part 71 (Be fearless, dream big)

By: Dr. Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Sr. Associate Editor, ICN Group

(In the past article, we knew about the concept that temporary setbacks are not dead ends. Today, we will see how to become fearless while dreaming big.)

BE FEARLESS, DREAM BIG

Experiencing fear of failure at some point of time in life is quite natural but fear should not rule you. Improving self-image by working upon your belief system is the best antidote to fears of all kinds. Further, the goal setting process also cures fear of failure. You get confidence when apparently huge looking syllabus is handled by reducing it into much smaller manageable chunks of study materials. Once you are confident that you can take small steps towards success, your confidence level will boost and daily actions will increase.

As a student, life is wide open before you and you have every right to dream as big as possible. I would say that you have every right to dream even impossible because at one time, even dreaming to lay foot on the Moon was considered impossible; but first somebody dreamt it, then somebody achieved it. With the power of GOPTA, nothing is impossible to achieve. We have to be just careful that we don’t get carried away by the opinion of others and don’t lose our focus from our goals. We should pursue, what is in our heart; and never leave our dreams to the opinion of others.

GOPTA will help you to choose between excuses or performance; enjoying comfort zone or taking necessary actions to achieve your dreams; watching television or reading study material or other useful books. The choice is yours but remember, you have no right to cry for the unwanted results unless you are ready to work upon the causes. It is an old saying that the pain of doing is temporary but the pain of regret is permanent.

Comfort zone and internal resistance to change developed since childhood provide a strong gravitation pull, not allowing your ‘decision’ to become ‘determination’ to actually start doing something positive on regular basis; and your so called ‘decision’ will remain a ‘wish’ only to be worked upon ‘someday’.  [ – From my book ‘How to Add 50000 Productive Hours to Your Life]

Remember the third limb of GOPTA i.e. Action. For taking action, you have to come out of your comfort zone by conquering your internal resistance to change developed since childhood.

Once you identify your purpose in life, it is important to identify, what skills you have to develop for achieving your goals. It may be communication skills, selling skills, learning any language, learning speed reading or fast typing skills, learning computers, leadership skills, shorthand, etc. Imagine, you have a wish granting magical lamp of Aladdin, who can grant you one skill. Which will be the most important skill, you would like to develop, which you think will take you closer to your goals?

It is important to identify what kind of knowledge you will be required to gather; what kind of skills you will be required to learn; what kind of people you have to meet and make good relations with; and what kind of coaching you will require. When you look forward for help, unlimited doors of opportunities keep opening for you, one after another.

Remember, to do something new, it is always difficult to take the first step. Remember, it is only you, who have to work for your dreams. Your dream has been given to you, not to anybody else. It is your responsibility to not only nurture your dream, but to work upon it. Once you start, the gates of success will mystically start opening for you; one after another.

As world famous speaker Brian Tracy rightly puts it, “All of the best advice in the world will only help you, if you can motivate yourself to take persistent, continuous action in the direction of your goals until you succeed.”

Some people don’t start due to fear of failure. But remember, if you start, there are chances of success; but if you don’t start, there is 100% failure.

(In the next article, I will touch the very important point i.e. Goal Setting for students. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
