(In the past article, we knew about the importance of becoming progressive in life and seeking new horizons. Today, we will know about how to use law of cause & effect, popularly known as law of karma in your favour.

Use law of Cause & Effect (Law of Karma)

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “shallow men belief in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect.”

There are two huge misconceptions in the minds of people regarding ‘Law of Cause & Effect’, commonly known as ‘Law of Karma’. One is that the ‘Law of Karma’ is a purely spiritual concept and another is that it is to be followed at some later date, say, after attaining the age of 60 or so.

Here I would invite you to see the ‘Law of Karma’ not only from a purely spiritual perspective, from the materialistic perspective also, as there is benefit of self in following ‘Law of Karma’. As I have already discussed that success is a journey and the ultimate goal is to move ahead in life. By far you have thought of various materialistic and other goals. Can you think about any goal, which is ultimate and there is no bigger goal conceivable than that. This is the biggest riddle of life and my own answer to this riddle is ‘increasing the accumulated balance of effects of positive karma’. This is necessary for the progress of the soul.

Whatever we think, speak or do, create causes in the form of impressions, which remain permanently in the universe and every cause has its consequences, which are bound to manifest in our lives and to be ripened over a period of time. Whatever, we have thought, spoken or done, we have to bear the consequences sooner or later, whether in this life or in a later one. Whatever results we are getting today, are results of the impressions, we created in the past by way of our thoughts, words and actions, whether in this life or in past lives. I am not going in depth of the science, how ‘Law of Karma’ works; as all of us know that our present day results are the outcomes of that portion of our accumulated karma, which has ripened to be manifested in this life, often termed as ‘luck’.

Now look at your life state and the circumstances surrounding you. You find that there are many persons in the world enjoying a lot and are apparently better placed in their lives than you. But at the same time, you must see that there are several persons, who are in a much inferior life state than yours. Look at your life state and compare it with the life state of others. You will find that you are in elite class as far as percentage is concerned. If your life state is better than most of the others, say than 80% or 90% of the total population, that automatically means that you are enjoying results of accumulated positive karma and thus working out the results of your accumulated positive karma.

Now the real theory arrives. If you are enjoying in your life, don’t you think that you are exhausting your account of accumulated positive karma? Is not it prudent to continuously work towards at least maintaining the balance of positive karma in your ongoing account, carried forward from one life to another? That’s why I always say that ‘Law of Karma’ has a materialistic perspective also. It talks about taking benefit for progress of self. Doing good to replenish the balance of accumulated positive karma is prudent from the age, whenever you grasp this concept and there is no need to wait for 60 years.

I take an analogy. Suppose, you have Rs. 1,00,000/- in your bank account and your monthly expense is Rs. 1,000/-. That means that your bank balance is sufficient for you for the next 100 months. Would you like to start saving after spending Rs. 1000 for 60 months, exhausting major portion of your opening balance. If you do so, you will have to save a lot in the remaining 40 months. Life also works like that. You can’t afford to delay starting accumulating positive karma till the age of 60 or so.

For the sake of easiness, suppose at the time of your birth, you had 1,00,000 good points and 40,000 bad points in your accumulated account of ‘Law of Karma’, out of which some good and some bad points have ripened to be manifested in the form of your life state during this life. Your present life conditions will be manifestation of these accumulated & ripened good or bad points; and manifestation of your thoughts, speech and action during this life time. You already know that whatever life state you are experiencing, you are exhausting some of the good positive karma and at the same time working out some of the accumulated negative karma. Now your target should be to at least keep intact the balance of good positive karma for carrying forward or to increase the balance.

This can be done only by improving your value to the universe as a whole. Become a contributor, not a sucker. Look at the opportunities of adding value to the universe, whether it is society or friends or neighbours or anything else.
