(In the past article, we knew about the strategies to overcome obstacles coming in the wake of achieving goals. Today, we will know how to identify the skills & help required to achieve your goals and what are the benefits of sharing your goals.)
While setting goals, you have to identify what are the skills required and what are the help required. You will have to share your goals for this to enhance accountability.
Identify the skills required
It is important to identify, what skills you need to develop for achieving your goals. It may be communication skills, selling skills, learning any language, learning speed reading or fast typing skills, learning computers, leadership skills, shorthand, etc. Imagine, you have a wish granting magical lamp of Aladdin, who can grant you one skill. Which will be the most important skill you would like to develop, which can take you closer to your goals?
Identify the help required
It is important to identify what kind of people you have to meet and make good relations with; and what kind of organisations will provide needed support to you, whenever required. When you look forward for help, unlimited doors of opportunities keep opening for you, one after another. But remember, don’t expect that 100% of the people in your list will help you, whatever close they may seem to you, otherwise you will get frustrated. You have to just make a list of persons or organisations, which can help you. How many of them will actually help you, is another issue. You can expect that only 20-30% of your list will actually cause 80% of your results.
Share your goal
Over a period of time, I have observed that one of the most powerful ways to move towards your goals is the practice of sharing your goals with your family members and the people you trust that they are your well-wishers and care about you. Two big benefits can be derived from goal sharing.
Goal sharing with anybody will hold you accountable. When you share a goal with someone, you feel committed, as you have made a promise to show the results and that’s why you feel motivated to take action and make it happen. I remember, when I was in the process of writing my first book, ‘How to Add 50000 Productive Hours to Your Life’, once I shared one short term goal with my daughter, studying at Hyderabad. One fine morning, I received a call from her, asking progress on that goal. I got stunned & speechless, as I had not made any remarkable progress. Immediately I felt the pressure from inside to do faster progress, so that I may not suffer any image loss in the eyes of my beloved daughter.
Another benefit is that you might receive some help from other persons. They may provide you any study material or any other type of material related to your goal. They may introduce you to some person, who may be helpful.
Every time you share your goals with any other person, your clarity increases. Moreover, your confidence level increases, as your sub-conscious mind gets a clear message that you are serious about achieving your goal.
However, I have a word of caution here. Don’t share your goals with anyone, who may discourage you just because your goal seems to be ridiculous to him or unrealistic to him. I remember, when I shared my goal regarding my workshop on time management and goal setting with one of my close friends, his remark was that my appearance does not match with the personality required for this type of work. I appreciated this feedback and started working on my looks and presentation skills. So, sharing goal brought me a constructive feedback, on which I could work over a period of time and overcome a prospective obstacle.
(In the next article, we will know about the importance of taking persistent actions to achieve the goals. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
