KOLKATA: In some of the past articles, we saw the importance of setting goals in different walks of life. From today, we will see the real goal setting process.

Steps in goal setting process

First step of goal setting process is, preparing a written list of all the things, you want in life, big or small, sooner or later. Write all. If you are married, include your spouse and children also in this process. Explore what you want in life. Remember, you have to write down your goals in every walk of your life, be it family, career, finance or whatever.  Write whatever you want to get; whatever you want to become; whatever you want to learn; whatever you want to do; whatever you want to contribute. Just write everything which comes to your mind. It is your wish list and it should contain even the minute desires. Keep on working this list for one or two days, till this list touches 100 desires in it.

Power of writing

You have to write your goals. Develop the habit of thinking on paper. In my workshops, often people ask, why it is so important to write; once we have the desire which is so intense that it has become our passion, then what is the need to write; how can I forget my goal; etc.? My answer is, that’s how the sub-conscious mind works. Eyes are the gateway to sub-conscious mind. When you read the written goal, the written words convey thoughts & ideas related to that goal to your sub-conscious mind.

As we all know, words are integral part of our thinking system. Words convey related images, pictures, emotions to the sub-conscious mind. Even movement of your hand while writing your goal goes deeper into your sub-conscious mind through your eyes and when you re-read the ‘Goals’ Summary’, your resolve becomes deeper and deeper. When the words are re-written, they have more deeper impact, so always keep on re-writing your goals; if possible, daily. When you will keep on re-writing, after re-phrasing, the goal will become clearer and motivate you to do work. Written goals influence your thinking and give inspiration to work in the direction of achieving your goals. Writing goals enhance your creativity. You must therefore prepare a master list of all the things you want to do or achieve in future. Big or small, achievable or seemingly unachievable, whatever stupid it may appear, write everything.

Identify why you want to achieve this goal

You have to develop an intense burning desire to achieve the goal by identifying, why you want to achieve the same. Write down, why you want to achieve any particular goal. The more reasons you will be able to write, your desire will crystallise more. If you can able to write down at least 5 reasons, why you want to achieve a particular goal, nobody can stop you from achieving the same, as that would mean that at the bottom of your sub-conscious mind, this intense desire will get deep rooted and will fuel your motivation level to take necessary action towards achievement of this goal. An easy way is to think that what positive would happen, if you achieve this goal or what negative can happen, if you don’t achieve this goal. It will make your thinking clear.

(In the next article, we will further develop this theory for your benefit and I will share some crucial points. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
