KOLKATA: In the last article, we saw that the true definition of success is “the continuous progress and maintaining an optimal balance among different walks of life.” We also saw that ‘underperformance’ in comparison to your true potential is another dimension of failure. Today, let us see it in more detail.

Become your best version

I would say that even if you have performed well in life and are successful in your life, please don’t compare your success with others. They might not be that much capable, as you are. You have to measure your success in comparison to your own true potential.

I am not talking just about financial success or success in career only. After all, money is not everything. I suggest you to look whether in pursuit of your career and financial aspirations, you have been able to maintain balance in different walks of life or not. If you reach heights in all the areas of your life, simultaneously maintaining a reasonable balance among them; then only you have a right to believe that you are successful, as you are not an underperformer. I would say that just like you find unsuccessful people everywhere on the first criteria i.e. ‘lack of success’, you will find everywhere unsuccessful people on the second criteria also i.e. ‘underperformance’ or ‘lack of balance in different areas of life’. If you are not able to tap your true potential, this is the waste of your inherent resources.

Even the successful people are not happy because they find more successful person in their neighbourhood. Here I want to lay emphasis upon the fact that success is not a particular juncture. It is a process; it is a journey. While taking your steps towards success, you have to enjoy this journey.

When you visit the Holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, from Katra to main temple, you have to climb about 12 Kms. of steep hills. You move ahead slowly, always keeping in mind your goal that you are moving towards the main temple for Darshan, and at every step, you enjoy your journey. You take breaks; you eat and drink; you form new groups en-route and move towards your destination i.e. Holy Shrine of the Goddess; enjoying the journey and keep on saying, ‘Jai Mata Di’ with lots of enthusiasm.

We wander here and there in pursuit of happiness. We think that we will be happy when we will get something or buy something. Often people link their purchasing power with happiness. I would say that it is the biggest misnomer. You must understand that happiness comes from inside. If we are not happy without luxuries, it is certain that we will not be happy, when we would gain luxuries. If you dream for a house, it’s ok; it is a necessity of life. But if you want a very big or most beautiful house, I must tell you that within 3 days of completion of your house, you will find a bigger and more beautiful house in your city. If you dream for a car, that is ok. It is also a necessity of life. But if you want to show off by buying a big and luxurious car; within 3 days of purchasing your luxurious car, you will find that your neighbour or your friend or your competitor is riding a better luxurious car. There is no end to it.

(In the next article, we will discuss more about this aspect. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
