(In the past article, we knew about the procrastination cycle. Today, we will see how it is that you actually get paid for the value, not for time.)
You actually get paid for the value, not for time
NOIDA: There is an old belief that in your job or profession, you are paid for your time and you can calculate your hourly rate. I believe that it is an inappropriate way of valuing the time. Actually, you don’t sell the time for money. You actually sell your value for money and divide the return by the number of hours given to calculate the hourly income. I suggest you to inculcate the new belief that in your job or profession, you are paid for the value you add to your organisation or society at large. If you want to increase your earnings, you have to increase your value to your organisation or to the society.
This concept is applicable everywhere. If you want to increase your hourly return, you have to first understand that increase in earnings is in direct proportion of your value; and to increase your value, you have to learn some more skills and qualities. Even if you are in any profession, like doctor or advocate, you have to increase your value to the society.
Every doctor is selling his value but his hourly return is different and this difference lies behind the fact as to how much value he is adding to the society. Here the value represents his capabilities. He has to upgrade his knowledge in his field so that he could maintain a high ratio of patients, who successfully recover from illness after getting treatment from him. For example, if you get a minor pain in any part of your body, normally you visit a doctor in your neighbourhood who charges Rs. 100 as his fees. If after 3 days, you don’t get relief, what do you do? You try to find out a specialist doctor. Normally, he charges Rs. 500 as consultation fees. Now think, are you paying him for his time or for the value, he is adding to your life by providing you relief from sickness. The answer is ‘value’, not ‘time’, as you find him more capable of adding value to your life in comparison to the first doctor, who also gave you same amount of time, or may be more time than this specialist doctor.
Same is the case with advocates or any other profession, you may imagine. Even a driver gets different salary as per quality of his driving skills. When you hire a new driver, initially you judge only one thing about him and that is, how safe he drives. Whether he is fuel efficient or not is secondary. Whether he can drive fast or not is secondary. After all, you have placed your life under his disposal and you have to be 100% sure that he is adding value to his job. His future salary will depend on this aspect only that how much you like his driving from safety point of view. Now imagine, if you hire a person for any job in your organisation, how much money you will pay to him per hour. It will depend on your appraisal as to how much value addition is expected to your organisation, if you hire his services.
If you understand this concept clearly by the bottom of your heart and sub-conscious mind, you will be ready to grasp, that whatever you are doing, you should always strive to make you more valuable by correctly utilising the time available to you. Increase in your income will be commensurate to your value, therefore always try to enhance your value. You will start taking 100% responsibility towards your organisation and will perform in a much better manner than ever before. You will start writing your own confidential report daily in the evening by asking yourself a question – whether you are contributing your 100% towards your organisational goals, or you are just working to justify your salary.
(In the next article we will see the importance of understanding the importance of learning to subordinate your individual goals to the organisational goals. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
