Era Of No War: North Korea Agrees To Shut Missile Site

“Today the North and South decided to remove all threats that can cause war from the entire Korean peninsula.”

The two leaders made the announcement on the second day of a three-day summit, their third this year, as part of efforts with the United States to contain the threat of war on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea says it will also permanently dismantle its main Nyongbyon nuclear complex but only if the United States takes reciprocal measures, Mr Moon added.

Kim said he would visit Seoul in the near future, in what would be the first-ever visit to the South’s capital by a North Korean leader.

He would be the first North Korean leader to visit the South’s capital since the peninsula was divided at the end of the Second World War.

North Korea would also shut down its Dongchang-ri missile engine testing and launch facility and allow the process to be monitored by international observers.

The South’s defence minister and the head of the North Korean army also signed an agreement to reduce military tensions, establishing a buffer zone along the border to prevent accidental clashes.

In their third summit, Kim and Moon also laid out plans to draw down forces along their heavily fortified border and announced an agreement for their athletes to compete as a single team at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and to submit a joint bid to host the games in 2032.

Moon was seeking to engineer a proposal that combines a framework for the North’s denuclearisation and a joint declaration ending the 1950-53 Korean War.
