Bypoll Results Live: BJP Trailing In UP, Ahead in Maharashtra; Congress Leads In Karnataka

NEW DELHI: Counting of votes for the by-elections to 4 parliamentary seats and 10 assembly seats is taking place today.The by-election result for Jokihat assembly seat will put to test the BJP-NDA government today.

The assembly seats where the by-elections were held on Monday are Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), Jokihat (Bihar), Tharali (Uttarakhand), Gomia and Silli (Jharkhand), Maheshtala (West Bengal), Ampati (Meghalaya), Palus Kadegaon (Maharashtra), Shahkot (Punjab) and Chengannur (Kerala).

The Jokihat assembly seat is a face-off between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejaswi Pratap Yadav. Bypoll is taking place here because of the resignation of present Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to contest the Assembly polls.

The ruling People’s Democratic Alliance in Nagaland has fielded former minister Tokheho Yepthomi.By-elections in Noorpur was necessitated because of the death of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Lokendra Singh in a car accident on February 21, 2018.Lokendra Singh had won the seat for BJP in both 2012 and 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections.

RLD’s Tabassum Hasan is leading by 55000 votes. BJP is leading in Maharashtra’s Bhandara-Gondiya.In Karnataka’s RR Nagar, where there was a traingular contest despite a Cong-JDS alliance in the state, Congress has taken a clear lead of about 4000 votes.

CPM candidate Saji Cheriyan is leading from the Chengannur Assembly seat in Kerala. Congress candidate Laddi Sherowalia leading by around 2000 votes in first round of counting for Shahkot assembly-by poll.Samajwadi Party takes lead in the Noorpur assembly constituency.After five rounds of counting in Jharkhand’s Gomia Assembly seat, JMM’s Babita Devi is leading with 9,664 votes.
