BHU Violence: UP CM Yogi Adityanath Seeks Report On Incident

Vice Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi has promised action and said the university will soon install of CCTV cameras in the campus.

VARANASI: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday sought a comprehensive report from the Varanasi Commissioner of Police about the BHU incident.

A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in lathicharge by the police inside the campus last night.

The incident happened within hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed his two-day visit to Varanasi and left for New Delhi.The university has announced “holidays” from tomorrow until October 2.

A heavy police force and PAC personnel, have been deployed in and around the campus to maintain law and order in the campus.

Several students, journalists covering the protest and policemen were injured in the incident. Later on Sunday, social activists and students demanded action against the policemen and the culprits in the molestation case.

A delegation of students who had gathered outside the residence of vice-chancellor G.C. Tripathi were pushed out forcefully by the police, following which the forces attacked the main body of protesters.

U.P. Congress president Raj Babbar and other party leaders were detained by police while they were on the way to BHU. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav condemned the incident and demanded action against those involved.

The protests began on Thursday after a student of the Triveni Complex women’s hostel was allegedly molested by unidentified men on motorcycles.

The BHU students alleged that campus security and police hit the protesters with lathis, pulled many of them by their hair and dragged them out of the spot.

DM Yogeshwar Ram Mishra warned strict action against elements involved in fomenting trouble at the university.
