Bharat Bandh Against SC/ST Act Today, High Alert In MP’s 35 Districts

Nearly 35 upper caste bodies have called for a Bharat Bandh in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.Around 150 organisations of upper castes and OBCs will take part in the Bharat Bandh.

NEW DELHI: The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill, which was passed by the Rajya Sabha by a voice vote, had got the nod of the Lok Sabha on 6 August.

As upper caste groups continue to protest against the Act that provides protections to the SC and ST community.The groups also demanded quota system based on economic status and not on the grounds of caste and religion.

Several upper caste groups had given a call via social media to organise a bandh on Thursday as resentment against the BJP has seemingly increased over the SC/ST amendment bill.

In Madhya Pradesh, Section 144 (unlawful assembly) has been imposed in 10 districts. Petrol pumps across the state will stay closed between 10 am and 5 pm. Educational institutions will also remain closed.

Protestors have stopped the movement the 3202 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Rajendra Nagar Express at the Arrah Railway Station.

Elected and non-elected members of both the major parties were avoiding taking a stand on the protests saying “it’s a sensitive issue”.

Protest march were taken out in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi and Agra. Schools and malls have also been closed in Jaipur today.

The legislation provides that no preliminary inquiry will be required for registering a criminal case and an arrest under this law would not be subject to any approval.
