The Assam government today released the final draft of National Register of Citizens list.The final draft contains names of 28,983,677 citizens and around 40 lakh people have been left out of the list.
GUWAHATI: The draft list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was released in Assam on Monday to ascertain illegal imigrants amid tight security arrangements across the state.Total applicants for citizenship in Assam 32991384. Total names figured in complete draft NRC are 28983677.
The draft NRC was released by the Registrar General of India, Shailesh, and NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela in Guwahati.
The National Register of Citizens will include the names of all Indian citizens who have been residing in Assam before March 25, 1971.
The first NRC was created in 1951 following the Census of the same year. It was a serialized list of houses and property holdings in every Indian village, with the number of people residing in them along with their names.
The NRC will include the names of all Indian citizens who have been residing in Assam before March 25, 1971, and will be published on Monday noon at all the NRC Sewa Kendras (NSK) across the State.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held a high-level meeting and has directed officers to remain alert and to help and explain the process of claims and objections to people whose names do not appear in the draft.
Sonowal has also directed the officials not to refer any case to the Foreigners Tribunal based on the NRC draft list.In his appeal to the people of the State to maintain restrain.
If a person’s name does not appear in the draft, they will have to apply in prescribed forms in their respective NSKs. These forms will be available from 7 August to 28 September and the authorities will then inform them the reason for their names being left out.
The NRC will be released online and in all NRC Sewa Kendras (NSK) across Assam at the same time (instead of noon as announced earlier), said NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela in Guawhati on Sunday.
The Centre has dispatched 220 companies of the Central armed police forces to gear up security in Assam and the neighbouring States.
Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia said all necessary steps have been taken to ensure peace across the state on Monday.
The Registrar General of India (RGI) has been ordered to use all means of communication including websites, toll-free numbers, SMS etc, to provide information to public about the Draft NRC.
