ITANAGAR: Union women and child development minister Smriti Irani on Friday lauded the efforts of East Kameng district, which has registered a sharp improvement in the sex ratio at birth (SRB).
East Kameng, one among the 25 districts of Arunachal Pradesh, registered a sex ratio at birth growth from 807 in 2014-15 to 1,039 in 2018-19.
Irani, who was addressing a function in New Delhi to felicitate states and districts for improving sex ratio, while making a special mention of East Kameng, said, “This makes it clear that nothing is impossible, if the government and society collectively resolve to achieve a target.
East Kameng deputy commissioner Gaurav Singh Rajawat, who has been spearheading the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, said there has been a massive improvement in the sex ratio at birth in the last few years.“Continuous efforts being made by the district administration, child development project officers and the health department to track pregnancies, support women at the time of deliveries and ante-natal checkups and vaccinations and most importantly in spreading awareness on eliminating discrimination against girl child,” Rajawat said.
He said local women’s organisations like Women’s Welfare Organisation, Changtham Ane and Mothers Group are actively participating in campaigns to make people aware of the importance of the girl child, their education and benefits provided under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme.“These groups have played a pivotal role and supported the district administration to make the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Pema Khandu ‘to save and empower a girl child’ a reality,” he said.
