74.61% Voters Turnout As Polling Ends In Mizoram Assembly Elections

In the previous assembly elections in 2013, the Congress won 34 seats, while Mizo National Front got 5 and the Mizoram People’s Conference won 1 seat.The state had recorded 83.41% polling in 2013. 

AIZAWL: Voting began in 40 constituencies of Mizoram at 7 am on Wednesday for its assembly elections.A total of 209 candidates are contesting the elections to the 40-member Mizoram assembly.

74.61 per cent votes were cast in the Mizoram assembly polls on WednesdayLong queues of enthusiastic voters have been seen outside many polling stations.

The election office sources said 40 companies of central armed police force in addition to the state police force have been deployed to ensure free and fair polls.

Each constituency has one polling booth exclusively for women voters, manned by women polling and security personnel.

The ruling Congress and the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) are contesting all 40 seats, the BJP has fielded candidates in 39 constituencies.

Former chief minister and opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) chief Zoramthanga was among the first voters to exercise franchise at 7.00 am.

Mizoram is the only Congress-ruled state in the North East region.Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla is seeking a third consecutive term.Lal Thanhawla is contesting the election from two seats (Serchhip and Champhai South).

Total voter population in Mizoram is 7.68 lakh, according to the Election Commission of India report.42 VVPATs, 25 ballot units and 19 control units were being replaced in various polling stations, the CEO stated.
