AGARTALA: Months before Tripura goes to general assembly polls, the left ruled state has got Humsafar Express services on Friday.

Union minister of State (MoS) for Railways Rajen Gohain flagged off the super-fast Humsafar Express from Agartala Railway Station. The train would directly connect Bengaluru Cantonment station via Premburu station near Chennai.

Addressing a gathering at the inaugural event on the day, Gohain said his government was committed to develop NE states at par with the rest of the country. No dearth of funds will arise if the issue is for development, he said.

Tripura was earlier given four other express trains including Kanchanjungha Express, Tripurasundari Express etc. The latest in the line was Rajdhani Express.

The express train for Tripura, Humsafar Express has come a bit pricey when compared to average air fares.

Humsafar Express would cover 3542 Km distance in 64 hours with 28 stoppages from Agartala to Bengaluru Cantonment. The train has an average speed of 56 km per hour.

In his speech at Agartala Railway Station  this evening, the railway minister said his ministry was looking forward to connect all northeastern state capitals by broad gauge services within 2020.

He also said that efforts were being taken to survey prospects of strategic rail lines along China and Myanmar border. India is already working on a project to connect with neighbouring Bangladesh through Tripura. The project is in advanced stage.

Earlier on the day, Gohain flagged of broad gauge train services in a 9.2 km segment between Udaipur and Garjee in Gomati district, 50 km southwards from Agartala.
