BrahMos is a joint venture between India and Russia and named after the Brahmaputra and Moscowa rivers.
In a major milestone, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was on Wednesday fired succesfully for the first time from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force.
The Defence Ministry said the missile hit a sea-based target in the Bay of Bengal from the combat jet. The land and warship versions of the missile have already been inducted into the armed forces.
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated the “Team Brahmos” and the scientists at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the “historic achievement”.
“Brahmos, the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile created history on today after it was successfully flight- tested for first time from the IAF’s frontline fighter aircraft Sukhoi-30MKI against a sea based target in the Bay of Bengal,” the defence ministry said.
Brahmos ALCM, which weighs 2.5 tonnes, is the heaviest weapon to be deployed on India’s Su-30 fighter aircraft. It has a range of 290 km.A BrahMos armed Su-30 can fly 1,500 km in the direction of a hostile target out at sea.
Brahmos is a joint venture between India and Russia. The missile has been jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPOM.
