(In the past article, we knew about the importance of having correct ‘attitude’ so as to achieve your goals. Today, we will know more about attitude.)
Add spice of attitude to your skills (cont..)
You have to remember that even if you have the best of the skills in your field, you have to develop a winning attitude, coupled with sincerity, which will take you to unprecedented heights in your field. Success, fame and money are all bye products of your sincere work.
As Venus Williams also says, “my goal is always the same: to keep the other player from ever scoring a point. That doesn’t always happen, but that’s what I try for.”
This theory applies to every field of life. Even doctors are skilled, advocates are skilled, engineers are skilled, employees are skilled; but success does not come to them, who do not add a spice of winning attitude to their skills.
By now, you must have seen that skill without positive thinking is not enough and positive thinking without desired skills is also not enough. You have to improve your skills. If you are playing cricket, you cannot score runs without skills, whatever quantum of positive thinking you may possess. Right skills are also necessary. I can lead you to success by improving your skills in each areas of your life, but if you have a toothache, I can’t do a surgery. I have positive attitude towards whatever I do; but I don’t possess the skills necessary to perform the operation. This can be done only by a dentist.
Positive thinking will let you utilise your skills and experience towards achieving your goals. It will guide your actions so that you move in the correct direction.
Only attitude is not sufficient. Only good idea is not sufficient. Only belief and hard work is not sufficient. You have to acquire necessary skills and training so that you can perform to succeed in the desired area.
You must have noticed that even when economy is weak, some people make their way to success, while some other people go bankrupt, even when there is a boom in the economy. This is because of the good or bad mental attitude. I have one friend who always responds to any opportunity, “how it will happen”, “I can’t do this”, “Tell me, how it is possible”. Here I must remind you, if you keep on exploring about ‘how’ first, nothing is going to happen. You have to believe first and then start. ‘How’ will take care of itself in due course.
Often people ask me, what to do in crisis time or how to handle the excessive pressure. My answer is that it is only the handling of the pressure situations, what makes the difference between a successful and unsuccessful person. A successful person would handle the situation without getting nervous and will handle extra pressure with ease, while unsuccessful person easily starts thinking that pressure conditions make him nervous.
I take here example of Virat Kohli, who is considered to be the best chaser of runs in world cricket. I have seen that even if in some matches, opponents need to bat first, they choose bowling first, because they don’t dare to leave a target for Virat Kohli. While this fear is in the minds of the opponents, Virat Kohli himself is confident that whatever run rate he has to chase, he will do it because he believes in himself. You may think that he does so because he has the necessary batting skills; but the fact remains that many other players also have similar skills or even better skills with bat. It is his attitude towards pressure handling, which makes him successful even on the big days.
You have to use Goals Oriented Positive Thinking & Action (GOPTA) in every walk of your life, especially in your thought process. You have thousands of different thoughts during a normal day. It is the quality of the thoughts and the direction of the thoughts, which determines level of success in life. You have to continuously check whether your thoughts are positive, resourceful and motivating you to take goals oriented actions.
Remember, life starts changing, when you develop an attitude of seeing where the things are going wrong and which areas need to be focussed.
(In the next article, we will know about the importance of inculcating the positive attitude since childhood. I believe that you are enjoying the journey towards the future of your dreams with me. If yes, please stay tuned every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Happy G.O.P.T.A.)
